SYI Turns Five This Year!

In less than two weeks, on Saturday, June 14, we will welcome this year’s group of 28 young Mississippi leaders to our fifth Summer Youth Institute.

SYI is a nine-day experience that provides rising Mississippi high school sophomores and juniors the tools to become change agents. SYI is not camp. It’s a place where worldviews explode, ideas take root, and change begins: a Freedom School.

Every SYI student leaves the University of Mississippi campus with a project s/he has conceptualized and planned based on a need of her/his community. Dozens of these projects are now thriving statewide.

All SYIers attend for free. After materials, food, lodging, staff/mentor stipends, transportation, etc., the per-SYIer cost is $2000; donate now to help us shape Mississippi’s future leaders!

Two SYI participants were recently recognized for their projects’ success:

• Cat Buffington, of Starkville, received Volunteer Mississippi’s GIVE Award, which recognizes outstanding volunteer leadership by a youth. Her UNITY project addresses race and class barriers that separate high school students by building relationships via community service.

• Karnessia Georgetown, a 2014 St. Andrew’s graduate, was named an “Amazing Teen 2014” by the Jackson Free Press. Girls’ Country, the brainchild of Georgetown and Zaria Williams, who also attended SYI, aims to connect and empower girls from public and private schools in the Jackson area.

Budgetary constraints cause us to turn away committed, qualified applicants from across Mississippi each year. We hope to grow the numbers of both passionate young Mississippians attending SYI each year and the community-focused projects they are launching around the state. Donate now to help!
