Community leaders from West Point, in eastern Mississippi, approached the Institute in 2012, indicating their desire to affect community-wide positive change. A dynamic group spanning racial and generational lines was formed and the participating members named their local committee Unity in Community. The group organized a city-wide Unity Celebration in the downtown park, an ice cream social supported by local businesses, which brought out hundreds of residents. One of the committee’s main goals is to engage and support community youth through programs like their Windale Apartment tutoring campaign and their summer youth camp for boys. In the fall of 2013, the Unity in Community committee was awarded the C.C. Bryant Community Progress Award at the inaugural Winter Institute awards dinner. Since then, the group has organized two tutoring programs, one in the spring of 2014 that focused on state test preparation at a local school and the other in which many community members committed the full school year in 2014-2015.
